Candle Care & Safety
Candle Care & Safety
Proper candle care helps your candle perform beautifully and, most importantly, helps you enjoy it safely.
Before Every Burn
Trim the wick to approximately 1/4 inch (6 mm) before each use.
A properly trimmed wick helps maintain a controlled flame, promotes an even burn, and may reduce excessive soot
and mushrooming.
Before lighting, make sure the wax surface and melt pool are free of wick trimmings, matches, dust, or any other
debris.
Always place your candle on a stable, level, heat-resistant surface before lighting.
The First Burn
The first burn is especially important.
Allow the candle enough time for the melted wax to reach, or come close to reaching, the edges of the vessel. This
helps establish an even burn pattern and may reduce tunneling during future use.
Do not leave the candle unattended while allowing the wax pool to develop.
During Every Burn
Never leave a burning candle unattended.
Keep the candle within sight while it is burning.
Keep away from children and pets.
Keep away from curtains, bedding, paper, furniture, decorations, and anything that can catch fire.
Keep away from drafts, ceiling fans, air-conditioning vents, open windows, and areas with frequent air movement.
Do not place a burning candle directly beside another candle. When burning multiple candles, allow adequate space
between them.
Do not touch, lift, or move the candle while it is burning or while the wax is liquid.
The vessel may become hot during use. Allow it to cool completely before handling.
Never burn a candle on an unstable or heat-sensitive surface.
Recommended Burn Time
For most container candles, we recommend burning for approximately 2 to 4 hours at a time.
Do not burn your candle for more than approximately 4 hours continuously.
Extended burning can cause the wick to become unstable, create an excessively large flame, increase soot, and
overheat the candle vessel.
After extinguishing the candle, allow the wax to cool and fully solidify before relighting. Whenever possible, allow the
candle to rest for approximately 2 hours before the next burn.
Watch the Flame
A properly burning candle should have a calm, steady flame.
Extinguish the candle if the flame becomes unusually high, flickers continuously, produces excessive smoke or soot,
develops a large carbon buildup or "mushroom," or if the vessel becomes excessively hot.
Allow the candle to cool completely, trim the wick back to approximately 1/4 inch, remove any debris, and inspect the
candle before relighting.
How to Extinguish Your Candle
Whenever possible, use a candle snuffer to extinguish the flame.
Never use water to extinguish a candle.
Water can cause hot wax to splatter and may create thermal stress that can damage or break a glass vessel.
Make sure the flame is completely extinguished and the wick is no longer glowing before leaving the candle
unattended.
Allow the wax and vessel to cool completely before touching or moving the candle.
When to Stop Burning Your Candle
For your safety, stop using the candle when approximately 1/2 inch (13 mm) of wax remains at the bottom of
the vessel.
Do not attempt to burn the candle until all of the wax has disappeared.
Burning too close to the bottom of the vessel may cause excessive heat to build up and can increase the risk of
damaging the container or the surface beneath it.
A small amount of remaining wax is normal and is part of safe candle use.
Keep the Wax Pool Clean
Never place matches, wick trimmings, herbs, flowers, paper, or any other objects into the wax.
Foreign material can act as an additional fuel source and may create an unsafe flame.
If debris falls into the candle, extinguish the flame and allow the wax to cool before carefully removing it.
Protect the Vessel
Do not use a candle if the vessel is cracked, chipped, damaged, or compromised in any way.
Avoid exposing the vessel to sudden temperature changes.
Never place a hot candle vessel onto a cold or wet surface, and never add water to hot wax or a hot candle
container.
Candle Placement
Always burn your candle on a stable, level, heat-resistant surface; away from flammable materials, drafts, and
moving air; and in a location where it cannot easily be knocked over.
Never burn a candle inside a cabinet, bookshelf, small enclosed space, or beneath an object that may be affected by
heat or flame.
Children & Pets
Keep burning candles and matches completely out of reach of children and pets.
Consider the movement of tails, paws, clothing, and accidental bumps when choosing where to place your candle.
Never rely solely on height if the candle can still be reached, knocked over, or disturbed.
Candle Storage
When your candle is not in use, store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and excessive heat.
Keep the candle covered when possible to protect the wax and fragrance from dust and debris.
Extended exposure to direct sunlight or high temperatures may affect the appearance, color, fragrance, or surface of
natural wax candles.
These cosmetic changes do not necessarily indicate a problem with the candle.
About Natural Wax
Lumen Harmony candles are crafted with soy wax.
Because soy wax is a natural material, you may occasionally notice slight variations in appearance, including
frosting, minor surface texture changes, or subtle color variations.
These characteristics are common in soy wax and do not necessarily affect the performance of the candle.
A Note About Soot
A small amount of soot can occur with any burning candle.
Proper wick care and candle placement can help minimize it.
Always trim the wick to approximately 1/4 inch before burning and keep the candle away from drafts.
If you notice excessive smoke or soot, extinguish the candle, allow it to cool completely, trim the wick, and check that
the candle is positioned away from moving air.
Important Safety Reminder
A burning candle is an open flame and should always be treated accordingly.
Never leave a burning candle unattended
Keep away from things that catch fire.
Keep away from children and pets.
Always follow the safety instructions provided with your candle.
Light with Intention
Your candle is more than fragrance - it is a moment to slow down, remember, reflect, or simply be present.
Take care of your candle, allow it to burn properly, and enjoy every moment safely.
